Day 1: What were the Wars of the Roses: Origins and Causes – Nathen Amin & Nicola Tallis

The Wars of the Roses was a brutal episode in England’s stories past that tore the kingdom apart. Join Nathen and Nicola as they explore how this violent conflict began, and why.

Day 2: The Rise of York (1455-1461) – Nicola Tallis

The emergence of Richard, Duke of York, as the principle political opponent to the reigning House of Lancaster changed everything. Who was York and what drove this competent Duke into open rebellion against his king, transforming a political quarrel into a dynastic struggle for the crown.

Day 3: War in the North (1461-1471) – Nathen Amin

With the House of York seizing the crown in 1461, the Lancastrians retreated into the English North to regroup under the leadership of Henry VI’s redoubtable queen, Margaret of Anjou. The blood-soaked fields of Yorkshire and Northumberland witnessed some of the most violent episodes seen in England’s history. Join Nathen as he takes you step by step through the Lancastrians quest for vengeance on the White Rose of York.

Day 4: Yorkist Victory and the Rise of the Tudors (1471-1485) – Nicola Tallis

In the spring of 1471 Edward IV made a dramatic return to retake his throne – and crush the Lancastrians for good. In April and May he won two decisive victories at Barnet and Tewkesbury, both of which were to have devastating consequences for the House of Lancaster. But not only was Tewkesbury monmental for Henry VI and his family, so too did it place the lives of another family in danger: the Tudors. Little could anyone have predicted that their own male figurehead, Henry Tudor, would in time make his own bid for England’s crown.

Day 5: Weapons and Warfare – Nathen Amin

The Wars of the Roses were bloody and brutal, but what did warfare in this period actually look like? This will be the lecture you won’t want to miss, as Nathen delves into a fascinating exploration of the longbows, swords, maces, daggers and poleaxes that severed limbs, broke bones, and brought lives to a bloody end.

Day 6: A Womens’ War? – Nicola Tallis

Whilst there is no escaping from the strong male presence of the Wars of the Roses, this was also an unprecedented period of female energy. As a result of her husband’s incapacity, Margaret of Anjou was forced to play the role of a female king in a desperate bid to retain England’s throne. She’d be succeeded by a woman who was equally formidable: Elizabeth Wydeville. Neither were these the only two women who wielded influence and sought to survive as power shifted from one dynasty to the other. Join Nicola as she seeks to bring the stories of the women of the Wars of the Roses to the fore.

BONUS: 1485: The End of the Wars? – Nathen Amin & Nicola Tallis

Join Nathen and Nicola for what’s sure to be a lively discussion! They’ll be musing about the Battle of Bosworth and what impact it had on the Wars of the Roses – did it really bring them to an end?

Day 7: Live Q & A with Nicola and Nathen
